This month the Porter Gallery is hosting the Toledo Streets Newspaper for their Fall fundraiser. The Exhibition, Toledo Streets Scenes, features 30 photos taken by Toledo Streets Newspaper vendors. Each image captures Toledo through the eyes and perspectives of several artists. The photographs are raw, honest examples of our local scene here in the Glass City. The show will be on view in the Martin D. Porter Gallery from October 5th through October 27th. The Toledo Streets fundraiser is October 18th at 5:00pm In the Gallery.
At the red light
In my car
between the cracks in the windshield
He reminds me of someone
Maybe in the drink he bought
Arizona emblazoned on the can
Or the skittles in his hand
he’s throwing away the purple ones
or the hoodie
the hood is up and I can’t see his face
It’s in his gait
A swagger really
Easy and carefree, so very
If you know TSA, you know a great show can be on any night of the week. Thursday night, October 4, National Honor Society is hosting its annual Open Mic Night Fundraiser. Students will perform original poetry, music (both original and not), and who knows, maybe a little stand-up comedy. The doors open at 7pm and admission is $3 for students and staff and $5 for all else. Cider and snacks will also be available.
On September 16, TSA hosted the 3rd Flying Pig Music Fest. This annual parking lot party is not only the first major fundraiser for the school, it stands out as the only major staff driven philanthropic event!! Every staff member was involved in some capacity– planning, volunteering, or appearing on stage; it was a chance for the TSA staff to ensure this event was a success!
Next week is the time for TSA staff to showcase their own talents! Come hear the musical talents of Leah Williams, Lydia Horvath & Melissa Toth (with Jamie Dauel), Diana Anderson & Megan Heer, and Amelia Lefevre (with Heer). Also on the program are two magnificent private voice instructors, Kim Buehler & Jo-Anne Chrysochoos, the private viola instructor, Reed Anderson (with Jamie Dauel) and Rob Desmond’s percussive presentation. The staff recital is on Monday September 25th in the Attic Theatre at 7p.m. Admission is free.
It’s not a TSA event if you’re not having fun! At the Flying Pig Music Festival, you can do just that. There’s something for the entire family from bubbles, face painting, and caricatures for the younger ones and live music and food trucks for everyone else. The doors open at 3:30 and the lot will be rockin from 4- 9:30. Come see local bands and musicians perform on the TSA loading dock with our TSA staff among them. It won’t just be the staff sharing the spotlight though, but our very own TSA students performing a piece or two from the upcoming musical, The Music Man. The dates for that show are October 19th- 22nd at Owens Community College Center for Performing Arts. All can also look forward to our cherished alumni GCS members, Messengers of Steel. Mark it on your calendar! We will be sad if you miss it.
Back in June over 100 works were submitted to the show, Undisclosed. Each work was signed on the back to keep the artist’s identity hidden. People purchased tickets to participate and upon entry to the show, each guest was given a number. The number they drew would determine the order in which they picked their piece to take home. Once a piece was chosen, the artist was then revealed. This current exhibition features the first three artists chosen at this event.
We have had an incredibly busy start of the school year! In addition to the usual start of the year activities our students participated in two fantastic events.
On August 19, Toledo School for the Arts was the Grand Marshal for The Toledo Pride Parade. TSA is the first school to have ever participated in this event, and we had over 200 participants!
